Speaking to disciples in Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus voices a call to all Christians. As disciples we are called to work for God’s kingdom and to perform His ministry, through lives that bear witness to God’s love. The Bible shows us individuals called to God’s service (Jeremiah 1; 1 Samuel 3).
As our gifts and talents are individual, God’s plan for each of us is unique; and John 15:16 reminds us that our vocation is determined by God. Some are called to ordained ministry, others as lay ministers or Readers licensed to specific duties in a particular parish or workplace. Others are called to youth work, pastoral care, evangelism, or contemplation (1 Peter 2:2; Romans 8:28).
Those who feel God’s calling should seek guidance from trusted advisers (Proverbs 15:22).
